WOOA Plastic Surgery › Frequently asked questions
What is capsular contracture?
Capsular contracture is when the capsule that forms around an implant tightens and the breast becomes hard. The clinic grades it in four stages: revision is not recommended for grades 1–2, while grades 3–4 may need revision following diagnosis.

How it is done
Breast proportions are checked and internal problems identified by ultrasound, then treatment is chosen by grade and incision site. For grades 1–2 there are steroid injections around the implant and ultrasound treatment to loosen hard capsule and tissue; for grades 3–4, surgery removes or incises the capsule causing the problem, or removes the implant along with the capsule or replaces it with a different type.

Frequently asked questions
How is capsular contracture graded?
Per the clinic: grade 1 feels soft with no discomfort; grade 2 keeps its shape but feels slightly artificial; grade 3 has a palpable implant and visible deformity; grade 4 has clear deformity and pain.
Does capsular contracture always need revision?
The clinic does not recommend revision for grades 1–2, where the change is small, and states that grades 3–4 may need revision following diagnosis.
How long is the operation and do I stay in hospital?
About 2 hours under general anesthesia, with same-day discharge or one night in hospital. There are no stitches to remove, and the clinic states a recovery period of one week.
Who performs the breast surgery?
The clinic's breast surgery and breast revision pages state that three board-certified plastic surgeons — Dr. Kim Woo-jung, Dr. Park Young-ji and Dr. Park Hae-yeon — operate in person. A board-certified anesthesiologist is dedicated 1:1 to anesthesia from the start to the end of surgery.
